Why travelling the East Coast is better by Train

Winter hasn’t even arrived, and yet we’re already thinking about a summer adventure. And when we think of an Australian summer, one thing that instantly comes to mind is the winding roads, stunning beaches and green rolling hills of the East Coast. While many choose the daunting task of planning a road trip along this well-travelled route, nothing quite matches the ease and comfort that a train journey can offer. No maps required – just an adventurous spirit.

If you’re considering an East Coast adventure, there are so many reasons to do it by train – here are our top five.

1. Everything is included

Summer is about switching off and slowing down. Shake off the Monday-to-Friday routine, embrace the vibrant colours of nature, and savour the simple joys the warm weather brings. The Great Southern is an all-inclusive experience, so you can completely switch off while on board. All you’ll need to think about is whether to have one glass of bubbles or two.

2. Great food and fine wine

The Great Southern train is so much more than a mode of transport. It’s an entire experience where you will be wined and dined throughout the journey. You won’t find any servo snacks on board. Instead, a team of experienced chefs prepares every meal fresh from a seasonal and regional produce menu.  Think Wagyu beef bresaola, fragrant summer vegetables, fig and honey ice cream.

3. Easy cross-country travel

There are over 2,000 km between Adelaide and Brisbane, and for those who self-drive, that’s a lot of time spent sitting in a car. While exploring the East Coast by train, you’ll travel vast distances in an epic few days while moving between your cabin, the restaurant and the lounge car. You’ll also have the opportunity to step off the train and explore the landmark locations you’re passing through, including the vibrant streets of Melbourne and the sun-drenched shores of Port Stephens.

4. Window Views

While the allure of the open road promises coastal views and lush mountain landscapes, a lot of time is spent navigating and looking at the road. Exploring the East Coast by train gives you a front seat to the ever-changing scenery. When you’re not eating a decadent meal, chatting to like-minded travellers, or reading a book, you’ll be gazing out the window, letting your mind drift off.

5. Warm hospitality

Ever feel like you need a holiday after your holiday? Often, the planning and preparation can be overwhelming, and you just need a break. The crew on board the Great Southern will shower you with friendly and familiar service, learning your coffee order and turning down your bed each night. They’re there to make sure you have the best experience possible and are always up for swapping travel stories, too.

Exploring the East Coast by train offers an unforgettable blend of adventure and relaxation. A summer adventure is always a good idea, so pack your bags, hop aboard, and get ready to be swept away on an epic journey through Australia’s most beautiful coastlines.
